Lawyers for Literacy
At Fleming Law Group, we believe defending right rights of criminal defendant’s is only half the job. Crime is not something usually that happens because people are “evil”, it stems from issues with education, struggles to remain financially independent, and issues with addiction and mental illness. The U.S. criminal justice system was created to reform criminals, but going to prison does little to address the systemic problems that leads a person to commit a crime.
Fleming Law Group’s lead attorney Lucas Fleming is the founder of Lawyers for Literacy, a non-profit program committed to helping underprivileged children pass the FSA (Florida Standards Assessment).
The Link between Crime & Education
Studies have shown that children who struggle in school are statistically more likely to run into trouble with the law early in life, and it’s no surprise. From an early age, we are told that succeeding in school is the key to succeeding in life. The problem is that not all children have resources that stimulate learning. Additionally, many children have busy home lives that leave them little time to focus on school.
Failing in school creates a frustrating sense that you have no chance of succeeding. Lawyers for Literacy aims to empower kids and help them realize their true potential. Passing the FSA is a big event for a child. Even if they have been struggling in school, scoring well on standardized testing can boost their self-esteem and encourage them to keep studying. We are proud to be a major part of this program to keep children out of the juvenile justice system!
